2012.
Garden Items Discussion
• Hoses
Two new hoses have been purchased for our use by the town. Please
keep hoses coiled neatly for easy path maintenance and use by other
gardeners.
• Water
We're operating (and have been for awhile) in the red, as our water
expense is higher than the amt. we take in for annual plot funds. We're
looking for ways to cut water costs, and number one is fixing leaky spigots.
Bob Miller and Kevin Smith have stepped up to work on this. Frank fixed
the first two spigots as you enter the garden last fall.
• Compost
We will be requesting compost from Town again this year, hopefully 2-3
weeks prior to rototilling date.
• Wood chips
For use primarily in berry cooperatives, not suggested to use in garden
areas as they don’t break down for many years and could be troublesome
for rototilling.
• Paths
We voted to eliminate the 2nd path running N/S to the right with the
understanding that there will be enough room given in the East/West paths
when the gardens are staked so a wheel barrel can get through.
• Rototilling
Date to be determined. Will ask for earlier date, try for May 1 although may
not be practical given chance of frost in early May and that the Town plowsall the community gardens on the same day. Flooding can cause delays in
other community gardens.
A new no-till zone will be added this year near the perennial beds. This
new zone and the perennials will need to be marked before rototilling.
• Staking
Date TBD. Martha Owen, Margaret Guertin, and Bob Miller have all
stepped forward and offered to help. Frank will try to help as he recovers
and has the stakes ready.
• Maintenance
Weeds: keep those in your plot, paths and surrounding area under control.
Mowing/weed whacking: Frank Canon has weed wacker in his shed that
can be borrowed when weeds are too long. Frank will continue to mow the
outside areas with his ride-on mower, but other gardeners can keep the
paths clear with a small mower or the weed whacker. CFCG will need to
maintain the machine and provide gas/ oil/parts as needed. This will also
need to be stored under cover for the winter.
Spring Clean up: picked the weekend of April 14/15th to clean out rocks
and woody things from our gardens. Please come and clean up your plots
from rocks, sticks and woody plants put in a pile in the rock/compost area
in back of garden. This helps with rototilling.
• Berry Co-ops – For information on Berry Co-ops contact Margaret for
raspberries and Barbara Pike for blueberries.
• Perennial garden area - happy to have help back there, volunteers
welcome to pull weeds and help themselves.
Expenses
• Water - biggest expense, please be mindful when watering.
• Flowers for Memorial barrel - suggested donation, but not required. If
not enough $ for purchase of flowers, will put it towards purchase of hoses
or manure.
